What Are The Far Lands in Minecraft?

Posted on by amber
Minecraft has no shortage of eerie legends and mysteries, but few among them ever turn out to be true. Today, however, we explore one that did while answering, “What are the Far Lands in Minecraft?”

What Are the Far Lands in Minecraft?

Minecraft Farlands Screenshot For a period during Minecraft’s beta, players would occasionally speak of a distant land where overworld generation changed to towering stone walls, stretched unnatural landscapes, and long dark tunnels that seemed to have no end. Further yet, some would even report that merely being there caused unpredictable bugs and crashes. But could such a place actually be real? That question was debated among players, much like Herobrine, but ultimately this one turned out to be real, and players dubbed it “The Far Lands.” A place that could be found roughly 12,550,821 blocks in any direction from spawn. However, this led to another question: Why did it exist? Why was there such an eerie landscape 12,550,821 blocks from spawn that most players would never see? There was no end to the theories, but sadly, the real answer ended up being rather mundane. The Far Lands was a world generation glitch caused by the noise generators, responsible for creating terrain shape, failing due to integer overflow. Or, in other words, going that far from spawn caused things to start breaking down.

How to Get There

Minecraft Story Mode Far Lands Screenshot The Far Lands can no longer be reached in modern versions of the game. But that has not stopped players from visiting by loading up Java Edition Beta 1.7.3 with a custom installation in the Minecraft Launcher. Once in-game, finding the far lands is as easy as teleporting 12.5 million blocks from spawn and continuing outward. However, there is also the famous challenge of walking there. A feat that can take hundreds of hours but earns a spot among the honorable few explorers who have actually made it to The Far Lands!
