Hytale Darkwood Farming Guide: Locations, How to Get, & Crafting Recipes

Posted on by cade-davie
There's no shortage of foliage in the world of Hytale. There are heaps of plants, vegetables, fruits, and, of course, trees to discover and utilize. As you start crafting and exploring more of the world, you'll have specific item requirements, and one of the trickier tree pieces to find is Darkwood. Don't worry! We can tell you exactly how to find Darkwood in Hytale and what it's good for.

How to Get Darkwood in Hytale

Hytale Darkwood Map Location screenshot If you want Darkwood, you need to find a tundra biome. Open your map and check for an area that looks somewhat icy. Like the image above, you'll want to find a partially snowy area but with some deadish, yellowish grass. Here you can find Cedar Trees. These are the trees you need to hack down for Darkwood. They can be a bit tricky to distinguish from the other trees in the tundra area, but you can recognize Cedars by their slightly blueish needles. Unlike Minecraft, you don't want to craft an axe for tree chopping. In Hytale, an axe is only used as a weapon against mobs. Instead, you need to use a hatchet to chop down trees. Luckily, you only need a Crude Hatchet to chop down Cedar Trees, and you can make one at any time, even without a Workbench. Here's the recipe for a Crude Hatchet:
  • Any Rubble: 2
  • Plant Fiber: 2
  • Stick: 2
Whether you're using a Crude Hatchet or a Thorium Hatchet, you can feel an entire tree in only a handful of hits. In Hytale, it's best to target the pieces of a tree that are touching the ground. As soon as none of the tree is making contact with the earth, every piece of the tree left hanging in the air will come crashing down as logs, sticks, sap, and more. However, if you want to grab every last piece of a tree, you can get even more by going after its roots. Tree roots in Hytale can often stretch several blocks deep and wide.

Darkwood Uses in Hytale

Hytale Darkwood Crafting screenshot Darkwood doesn't have many specific uses in Hytale. Eventually, you will need 40 pieces of Darkwood to upgrade your Farmer's Workbench to Tier 6. You'll need the following materials for the Farmer's Workbench Tier 6 upgrade:
  • Darkwood: 40
  • Tomato: 40
  • Chili: 40
  • Greater Essence of Life: 4
Other than that, however, Darkwood is simply another source of lumber with a unique look. Of course, the main interest Darkwood will have to most players is its aesthetic. With a Builder's Workbench, you can turn all of your Cedar Logs into Darkwood Planks, Darkwood Stairs, and plenty more Darkwood-colored furnishings and structures. But keep in mind, to create any Darkwood decorations, you'll need a Builder's Workbench. Here's the recipe for crafting a Builder's Workbench:
  • Any Stone: 3
  • Any Tree Trunks: 6
